What? I hear you say. That's not a maple in your picture. Jolly well is.
A field maple, and growing 200 yards from my home here in West Dean woods. These natives are different from canadian maples. Their leaves are much smaller.

Hide AdField maples grow all over Sussex. They are very common. They are often found in hedgerows and sometimes they are allowed to grow into tallish trees.
Then they show off their wonderful bright yellow or orange leaves to perfection. Field maples stand out a mile when their leaves have fallen too.
