The number of asylum seekers receiving support in Mid Sussex has soared in the last year following a rapid rise in people applying to become refugees in the UK, new figures show.

The number of asylum seekers receiving support in Mid Sussex has soared in the last year following a rapid rise in people applying to become refugees in the UK, new figures show.

Refugee charities said they are deeply concerned with the "growing number of people living in limbo", waiting for a decision on their asylum claim and urged the Home Office to address the backlog of applications and provide greater financial support for those awaiting decisions.

Home Office figures show 326 asylum seekers received support from local authorities in Mid Sussex at the end of June – up from one the year before.
